Education serves as the primary vehicle for building a better life by unlocking otherwise inaccessible opportunities. Through fostering a skilled workforce, education allows developing economies to attract foreign investment, modernize technologically, and improve productivity—education is the cornerstone for broadly improving standard of life in any country.

Many African countries present a challenging environment for NGOs—these obstacles present themselves in the form of political instability, poor public infrastructure, and lack of education initiatives. Ghana, by comparison, transitioned to a multi-party democracy in 1992 and has enjoyed peaceful transitions in power with minimal political upheaval. Education and infrastructure improvement projects undertaken by the Ghanaian government present a sizable population of students who both have an urgent need for meals and can be reached through a centralized kitchen model.

GC-Nutrition began in 2018 as a small food stand. When Justin and Richard met Larbi—now our Ghanaian based co-founder and Director of Operations—founded a partnership with a shared vision for helping children. Managing operations overseas requires trust. That’s why we’ve built a team of capable, local leaders who can carry out our mission with integrity and skill. Ghana’s favorable conditions and our trusted staff give us the confidence to scale our impact. Trust is essential when conducting business overseas where our US-based board members cannot reasonably participate in all aspects of direct management. Therefore, we focus on developing management talent who we trust can execute on our vision.

Due to Ghana’s inherent stability, the country’s focus on education, and our trust in our capable operational staff, we believe that GC-Nutrition will have the most impact in ameliorating the lives of many schoolchildren when compared against other countries.

Many schools lack a dedicated meal program, meaning students must purchase food from external vendors who offer no financial support or nutritional guarantees. To address this concern, we use donations to help fund our operations from ingredient purchases, employee payroll, meal subsidies, and expansion efforts to additional schools. Recent investments include opening new kitchens, purchasing additional kitchen equipment, hiring cooking and management staff, receiving formal sanitation certifications, obtaining vehicles for meal transportation, in addition to many other logistical endeavors.

As we are dedicated to providing meals for all students regardless of their economic circumstances, we often price meals at or below total ingredient costs, with additional aid for families that need it the most. While GC-Nutrition dedicates efforts to creating a self-sustaining model where excess income from premium meal offerings can cover subsidized meals, recent agricultural shortfalls within Ghana and inflationary headwinds mean donations are critical to our continued operations and ability to provide subsidized meals. Equivalent NGOs operate with budgets in excess of $5mm, while GC-Nutrition relies on annual donations totaling ~$30-50k.

While we are proud of our progress thus far and are very grateful for our generous patrons, there is always more that can be done; therefore, we strive to stretch each incremental dollar as far as possible.

GC-Nutrition provides nutritious school lunches for students in Kofuridia (Western Ghana). We ensure a healthy balance of macro and micronutrients based on World Food Programme (WFP) developmental recommendations. All meal offerings are cooked in-house by trained and licensed staff. Meals usually consist of a protein (e.g., eggs, chicken, soy-based protein, etc.), a carbohydrate – typically rice – and vegetables mixed in with the aforementioned rice dish; we also provide festive meals on holidays and other special occasions.

We price meals by total weight and protein intake, allowing families to select between subsidized meals (which meet or exceed nutritional guidelines) or more “premium” offerings with additional protein offerings, snacks, and beverages. We invest any proceeds from higher-tier meal offerings to provide additional meal subsidies, cover operational expenses, and expand to additional schools and communities.

GC-Nutrition exclusively sources ingredients from regional vendors, promoting local economic growth, and fostering a close-knit relationship of cooperation with the broader community in Kofuridia. Our employees often travel by motorcycle to visit vendors nestled in mountainous agrarian communities to purchase tomatoes and other vegetables. As we expand our operations, GC-Nutrition is also evaluating the practicality of sourcing and importing components in bulk to reduce operational overhead.
